Welcome to Part 4 of the Guide to SEO which covers keyword research and keywords to target on your site to get new traffic.

Keyword research is one of the most essential, worthwhile, and high return actions in the SEO field. Ranking for the correct keywords can make or break your website. Researching into your market’s keyword demand, you not only learn which terms and phrases to target with SEO, but also learn more about your customers in general and there marketplace.

It’s not always about getting visitors to your site, but about getting the right kind of visitors. With keyword research you can predict shifts in demand, respond to changing market conditions, and produce the products, services, and content that web searchers are already actively seeking.

To make sure you are going to optimise for the right keywords you will need to do some checks first.

Make sure the keyword is relevant to the content on the site. Will users be happy clicking on your site for that keyword? Will they find what they are looking for? Will it get you conversions on the site if yes to all these than that is a good start.

Next search this keyword in search engines and get a feel for the competition. Are the results you see similar businesses to yourself? How competitive is this search term? Are there adverts for this keyword this will give you an idea if it is a popular search term?

Visit https://adwords.google.com/o/KeywordTool and using exact match search the term and see the traffic if gets on a monthly basis globally and in the UK.

If you are still not sure than you could create a Google Adwords campaign and use the keyword using exact match and see what traffic and conversions come from this keyword after collecting the data you have received through this test.

If you are happy with the keyword after testing it through this process then it good to go with this keyword for your site.

The Guide to Google – Part Two

Google has changed over the years dramatically from just displaying ten results per page to have shopping, images, maps and videos on their search results.

Today’s blog post will take you through the search results that appear on Google search.

 

Google’s over the Years

Today is Google’s 14th birthday after being formed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998. They have developed over the years to be one of the biggest companies in the World. To read more on the history of Google please view here.

As you can see in the image below Google searches have gone from strength to strength in the last six years making them the ideal place to get information from.

Google Search

Google search is split into two sections with an organic section and a paid section. You will see in the image below that the paid search highlighted in red dominates the top of Google and down the right hand side.

To be positioned in the paid search you have to have a Google Adwords campaign where you can create adverts that can display on the search results when certain keywords are searched. If your ad gets clicked then you pay a fee that you have bidden to get to the position on the search.

Google Local

Google has incorporated maps into their search results and this helps local businesses appear for local searches and is helpful to the user if they require to source there item from a local supplier or business. You can create this for your business by visiting Google Places.

Google Shopping

When searching for a product like a piece of clothing Google shows the top three related searches from the shopping section in the organic search. The information that is shown is an image of the product, name of the product, price and website as you can see below. You can set this up so your products can be seen by setting up an rss feed of your products and going to Google Merchant Centre.

Google Videos

Google has incorporated YouTube videos into the search results and this can help the user be able to interact with their search query. To get your videos shown on the search results you can submit a video sitemap to Google to index you video from your site. Please see how a video looks like on a search query below.

Understanding the Search Engines – Part One

Here at Wida Search we are going to start from the beginning and give you a guide to how SEO works so you can implement your own site to get it ranking better on Google and other search engines. Today we are starting with looking at how search engines work.

 

How Search Engines Work

Search Engines like Google have four key roles crawling, building an index, calculating relevancy and rankings and providing results for the user.

The way search engines crawl a website is via links so it will collect each web page, PDF, JPG or any other file type. Through links the search engine robots can reach billions of interconnected documents.

Once the engines find a page it will glance at the code on the page and store parts of the page to its hard drive ready for it to be recalled for a search query. There are many data centres around the world storing this data ready to give a search query its most relevant data.

 

Providing Results

When a user is on a search engine and searches for something online the search engine has two jobs to do, first return all the relevant pages to that search from its hard drive and secondly rank the results in order of importance.

At the moment major search engines typically show importance by popularity, the more popular the site, page or image the more important this must be.

Popularity and relevance are not determined manually, the engines have mathematical algorithms to sort out the good from the bad and then rank then in accordance. These algorithms have hundreds of ranking factors to consider in ranking a website number one or on page 10.

 

Search Engines

They are two main search engines which are Google and Bing as Yahoo does no longer get the traffic it once had. Google is considered the dominant search engine because of the user interaction it gets compared to Bing, However these two search engines have different ranking factors to each other which results in different results for the user.
