Keyword research is one of the most essential, worthwhile, and high return actions in the SEO field. Ranking for the correct keywords can make or break your website. Researching into your market’s keyword demand, you not only learn which terms and phrases to target with SEO, but also learn more about your customers in general and there marketplace.

It’s not always about getting visitors to your site, but about getting the right kind of visitors. With keyword research you can predict shifts in demand, respond to changing market conditions, and produce the products, services, and content that web searchers are already actively seeking.

To make sure you are going to optimise for the right keywords you will need to do some checks first.

Make sure the keyword is relevant to the content on the site. Will users be happy clicking on your site for that keyword? Will they find what they are looking for? Will it get you conversions on the site if yes to all these than that is a good start.

Next search this keyword in search engines and get a feel for the competition. Are the results you see similar businesses to yourself? How competitive is this search term? Are there adverts for this keyword this will give you an idea if it is a popular search term?

Visit and using exact match search the term and see the traffic if gets on a monthly basis globally and in the UK.

If you are still not sure than you could create a Google Adwords campaign and use the keyword using exact match and see what traffic and conversions come from this keyword after collecting the data you have received through this test.

If you are happy with the keyword after testing it through this process then it good to go with this keyword for your site.

To be able to achieve a high ranking in Google or the other search engines you need to have a website that is accessible, has a good design, well written content and is easy to navigate. To achieve these things it takes time and planning but it is time well rewarded in the end.

For example would you visit a site that did not look good or it had no content on it. NO, so why expect users to stop on your site if it does not do the above correctly.

Below are the tips to make a friendly SEO website that the search engine will crawl with ease.

  1. Simple and Clean design so the user can see the content easily and be able to look around the site without any distraction.
  2. Follow W3C Standards
  3. Easy Navigation including a breadcrumb so the user can navigate forward and back around the site
  4. Use JavaScript over Flash so users can view your site on all browsers and devices
  5. CSS Image replacement to help page loading time for the user
  6. Make sure your non-www version is redirecting to your www or the other way round or this will be classed as duplicate content.
  7. Friendly URL’s that are short and more relevant-looking links to web pages making it easier for the user to know what the page is about.
  8. Custom 404 page show the user knows an error has happened on the page but has been alerted and shown other pages to move on to.
  9. Block pages that you don’t want search engines to crawl so these won’t be seen on the search engines and get traffic that you may not want.
  10. Use heading tags so it tells the search engine and user what the page is about
  11. Accurate xml sitemap so search engines can crawl your site easier
  12. Use rel-canonical to help duplicate content and this tell search engines your preferred choice of a page
  13. All Images to have ALT tags to help with accessibility issues
  14. Meta Titles no more than 70 characters and that each unique to each page
  15. Meta Descriptions no more than 156 characters and that each unique to each page. Meta descriptions allow you to influence how your web pages are described and displayed in search results
  16. Sharing social media buttons on your site you people can share your content on social media.
  17. Keep pages fresh with new content
